A counterfeit phenomenon in China

    Deposit of the world counterfeit

According to the Global Brand Counterfeiting Report for 2018, the amount of loss worldwide is $323 billion. 80% of counterfeit are manufactured and distributed in China and from there, fake goods are sent to other countries. At the end of the last century, the production of counterfeits in China has increased dramatically as many famous brands started to open their shops and start production in the Celestial Empire. Thanks to many years of relocation of foreign companies Chinese factories now have the skills necessary to create any fake, from bags to cars.

Chinese counterfeits became popular due to their affordability. In the country itself, there are multiple counterfeit markets. But we should understand that fake products also differ. Counterfeit products differ in price, quality, and even the place of sale. For example, famous Silk Market in Beijing. Some pseudo-branded things are sold openly here and in other shops, you can see almost exact copies of the original goods but without any emblems or logos. Meanwhile, you can pick a bag, the exact copy of Gucci, order it online or from the seller and receive it a few days later but already with the distinctive sign. Often in China you can even find entire shops of "luxury" goods, with almost identical signs, fonts, and product selection. The difference may be almost invisible, for example, in the names of the shops: Plada, Loius Vuitton, or Codiva.

Try to find the difference! Same as there is a huge number of ways how to sell counterfeit, there are many types of fake products. That’s not always a cheap mass-market product, which falls apart after a week of use. Quite often you can find a forgery almost equal in quality to the original, or even better. Many representatives of famous brands agree that it’s quite possible to find a forgery that even they could not distinguish from the original. Obviously, such a thing will cost also more, not as costly as the original, but rather expensive.

But how is that possible? Brands put an effort, design products, a whole staff of professionals selects materials, creates styles, and in general puts soul and outstanding talent into the product while somewhere in Chinese province a few women in a basement create exact copies “on their laps”. That’s easy. There are a lot of brand fabrics in the country which officially produce luxury goods made from quality materials. However, every manufacturing site has some raw materials leftovers or a few contracts with some smaller companies. The quality and the fabric are the same, all we need to do is to add a few dots here, a few colors there and a logo with a minimal difference and voilà, we have Adidas shoes for $500 and almost their exact copy Adudas, I note, no worse in quality, but for $20. That’s absolutely legally and quite profitable.

Let's check a few examples of copies of famous brands:

Giorgio Armani. The original price starts from 3.300 yuan, and the price of a forgery – from 50 yuan.

Versace. A dress from a global brand will cost you at least $1000? And the workers of Versasi will make you an outfit for about $60.

    Статья 2.jpg

Lacoste. Brand perfumes will cost at least $55, while the price for the scent from its very distant relative, will start from $2.

Even though starting 2019 the sale of pseudo-brands is strictly prohibited in China, on store windows you will mainly find replicas without tags or logos, but after certain agreements, in a couple of days, you will receive your branded item with a full set of identification marks. Here you can find Prada, Dolce&Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Givenchy, Calvin Klein, Dior, Gucci, and many others. Therefore, it is not surprising that the phenomenon of counterfeiting is not losing its popularity.

Counterfeit production is a state crime, the same as the distribution of goods under someone’s name or without the permission of official brand owners.
